Kasturba Medical College was established in 1955 and is a constituent part of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. KMC Mangalore was the first self-financing college and is a prominent research centre in India. The institution is recognised by the Medical Council of India, the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council. KMC is known globally for its quality education. The pre-clinical section was started in Mangalore in 1961. KMC Mangalore has secured the 9th position in NIRF Ranking 2023.

KMC Mangalore has been ranked by various agencies, for example, The Week ranked Kasturba Medical College as 6th among top private colleges in the south zone and 9th top medical college in India in 2016. All the KMC Mangalore courses offered are approved by MCI and affiliated to Manipal University. Moreover, the Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates (ECFMG) has recognised the institute as one of 20 International Medical Schools for electronic credentials verification programmes. KMC Mangalore has the highest ICMR STS awards in the country.
