PGIMER Chandigarh

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) was established in 1962, based on the vision of the late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, who was then the Chief Minister of Punjab, along with several renowned medical educationists from the undivided Punjab state. Their efforts were supported by India’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, who viewed scientific institutions as temples of learning. On July 7, 1963, Pt. Nehru inaugurated the hospital, now known as “Nehru Hospital.” Initially founded by the Government of Punjab, the institute came under the administrative control of the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966 after the reorganization of the state.

PGIMER is widely recognized as one of the premier medical institutions in India. It currently operates under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Indian Nursing Council, and the Government of India. In 1967, it was declared an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament, functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with a mandate to deliver quality education, training, and research.

For the academic session 2024, PGIMER Chandigarh is accepting applications for its M.Sc and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs. Interested candidates can apply online through the official admission portal.

The institute was founded with the purpose of providing world-class medical education and equipping students with the skills to become expert medical professionals and educators. PGIMER offers more than 50 academic programs, including Medical, Para-Medical, Nursing, Residency Programs, Short-term and Elective Training, and specialized courses like MHA, MPH, PGDPHM, and various Fellowships.

Admission to PGIMER programs is primarily based on performance in the INI CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test), which serves as the standard entrance examination for many of its postgraduate courses.
